My girlfriend had a great question for me the other day. She likes to train hard and practices healthy eating like a lot of women these days. But she had a great question. She is smarter than the average person when it comes to nutrition. That comes from the benefit of growing up in a sporting environment (and maybe listening to me rant on about different topics too!), so I am certain that she is not the only one confused by the food myths about nutrition that are out there today.
Surely we have been brainwashed here? The pet food industry is so lucrative for the big-name manufacturers, that they devote a huge budget to marketing, advertising and seductive packaging. If anyone tried to tell a mother that the only way she could feed her children “complete and balanced” nutrition was with a processed, packaged (or canned) food and nothing else, she would be horrified!
Q I know fruit is supposed to be good for me but I read Food Myths somewhere that eating too much can cause me to gain fat because of all the natural sugars is this true?

Carbs have had a difficult time recently with the Atkins diet becoming so popular, but they don’t actually deserve the bad press they get. Whilst a high carbohydrate diet (potatoes, bread, rice, pasta etc) will not actually make you gain weight, it is the fat added to the carbohydrates in the sauces and cooking methods that will raise your calorie count.
The truth is actually somewhere between the middle. I’m of the opinion that what you put in your body is as important as what you put on it. This will not tell you what not to eat but rather what to eat for beautiful skin. So ladies make notes on how to feed your skin.
In an episode of one of my favorite TV shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there was once a musical episode. In one song Anya sings about her fear of bunnies in which she says “and what’s with all the carrots? What do they need good eye sight for anyway?” I was very disappointed to learn that this is another food myth. While carrots are a good source of vitamin A they do boost your eyesight. The myth began during World war ii when Britain’s air ministry spread the word that carrots helped pilots see Nazi bombers at night. However, the word they were spreading was a lie to cover up the real reason for their success, the Airborne Interception Radar.
